With the growing demand for lithium ion batteries in the electric vehicle industry, the issue of waste management, recycling, and reuse of spent lithium ion batteries has become critical. This paper aims to review the current processes and technologies involved in recycling these batteries, which primarily consist of transition metal oxides or phosphates, aluminum, copper, and harmful organic electrolytes. The study discusses the challenges presented by the high energy density and diverse composition of lithium ion batteries, which complicate their recycling efforts. Through a comprehensive examination of existing recovery technologies, including both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes, the paper highlights the latest advancements in recovery techniques and the ensuing products. Furthermore, it addresses the ongoing challenges faced in this field and explores future economic prospects and applications for recycling spent lithium ion batteries, underscoring the necessity of proper waste management to mitigate environmental impacts.
