Abstract

Language:

This paper discusses the critical role of dry film thickness (DFT) measurements in the quality control and inspection of protective coatings, essential for marine applications. The main objective is to highlight the implications of the IMO resolution MSC 215(82) on performance standards for protective coatings and its influence on DFT measurement's importance in achieving durability. A comprehensive methodology is employed, comparing DFT standards from ISO in Europe and SSPC in the USA. Through the analysis, various measuring techniques, the acceptability of readings, and inspection plans are explored, providing a clearer understanding of DFT measurement. Results indicate discrepancies in current standards and procedures that were developed when older measurement technologies were in use. Additionally, examples of typical readings and their analytical approaches are presented, alongside recommendations for addressing inconsistencies and inefficiencies in DFT specification, measurement, and result analysis. This work aims to inform coating specifiers, applicators, and inspectors to enhance the accuracy and reliability of DFT measurements in their practices.
