With a goal to understand the fate and behavior of chlorinated organic pollutants such as dioxins, chlorine stable isotopes have been paid a great attention. In order to quantify the isotopic compositions of thus organic materials, we preliminarily investigated a supercritical extraction method to obtain chloride from a sample powdered poly-vinyl chloride (PVC), without adding any organic solvent. The experiment was performed at the supercritical condition of water, over 600˚C and 30MPa, and it was found that 80% of the PVC was readily decomposed without significant isotopic fractionation. This method for the purpose of the Cl isotope analysis of any Cl-bearing organic materials seemed well promising.
