The occupational health risk to miners from exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in underground coal mines is a critical issue that requires thorough investigation. This study aimed to characterize the pollution and assess the health risks associated with VOCs across three distinct mining areas: Pan San Mine, Qinghai Yuqa Mine, and Hongliuling Mine, which utilize different mining and transport methods. VOC concentrations and compositions were systematically monitored at various locations within these mines, including the working face, air return tunnel, and air intake tunnel. The results indicated that underground VOC concentrations were significantly higher than surface levels, peaking at 10.8 mg/m3 in Pan San Mine, 9.31 mg/m3 in Qinghai Yuqa, and 14.29 mg/m3 in Hongliuling Mine. The study also found a consistent pattern of VOC concentration, with the working face exhibiting the highest levels. Compositionally, variations were observed depending on mining methods. Notably, the analysis revealed that exposure indices for VOCs with established occupational exposure limits were significantly below 1, implying negligible health risks under the studied conditions. This research provides valuable insights into VOC exposure in coal mines and emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of occupational health risks associated with mining activities.
