Abstract

Language:

The blast furnace and direct reduction processes have been the major iron production routes for various iron ores in the past few decades, but the challenges of maintaining the iron and steel-making processes are enormous. This study provides a systematic overview of the different ironmaking routes, their operational limitations, and sound future perspectives to mitigate challenges based on modern production demands. Strategic ways toward improving production efficiency and product quality of metallic iron were suggested, highlighting the non-contact direct reduction and reduction-smelting routes as faster, efficient alternatives with lesser energy demands and carbon deposition. The study reiterates that these processes remain viable for today's iron and steelmaking, aiming for cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency in iron production.
