This paper discusses the theoretically and experimentally determined copper matte settling rate in iron silicate slag, focusing on the separation and settling rate measurements of various copper mattes mixed with silica sand in an alumina crucible at temperatures ranging from 1300 to 1350°C. Two types of slag compositions with Fe/SiO2 ratios of 1.4 and 1.7 were employed for the study. The results indicated that the settling rate of copper matte in fayalite slag was influenced by the composition of the slag, with increased silica leading to a decreased settling rate. Microanalysis of solidified slags revealed that low-grade matte exhibited a lower rate of separation compared to high-grade matte, while a small fraction of matte droplets remained suspended in stagnant fluid. Additionally, the study found that the generation of sulfur dioxide gas within the molten bath was feasible up to a certain iron sulfide content in the matte. The findings provide valuable insights into copper matte settling rates in industrial furnaces, highlighting the implications for smelting practices.
