Abstract

Language:

This document discusses the different forms and factors influencing chemical corrosion, particularly focusing on electrochemical corrosion. The objective is to elucidate how metals convert to oxides when exposed to reactive gases and the effect of various influencing factors, namely, the nature of the metal, temperature, electrolyte concentration, electrode potential, aeration, agitation, hydrogen overvoltage, and pH of the electrolyte. The methodology involves a qualitative description of eight forms of corrosion, including uniform attack, galvanic or two-metal corrosion, crevice corrosion, filiform corrosion, and pitting corrosion. The results highlight that uniform attack is the most common form of corrosion, while galvanic corrosion occurs due to potential differences between dissimilar metals in conductive solutions. Crevice corrosion is noted for its intensity in shielded areas, and filiform corrosion is characterized by attacks under protective films. Pitting corrosion is described as localized attack resulting in holes in the metal. Each form presents specific mechanisms of corrosion, contributing to the overall understanding of how different environmental factors influence metal deterioration.
