Abstract

Language:

Today, the architecture of electrical networks is evolving with the rise of distributed dc generation from photovoltaic systems and small wind turbines. The objective of this article is to explore the historical development of electrical networks, from the emergence of efficient dc electromechanical generators to their role in modern energy systems. Utilizing a historical analysis methodology, this paper highlights the contributions of key figures such as Werner Siemens and Zénobe Gramme, who played pivotal roles in the evolution of dc technology and its eventual competition with ac systems. The findings illustrate how Gramme's innovations, particularly his dynamo, marked the beginning of large-scale electric power production, which was showcased during significant industrial exhibitions. Additionally, the paper discusses the impact of the Wiener Weltausstellung in 1873 and other exhibitions on the dissemination of these technologies. Ultimately, this historical perspective provides insight into the transition from dc to ac systems and sets the stage for current advancements in smart grids and high-voltage power electronics.
