Sustainable development has emerged as a critical global objective, presenting unique challenges, particularly for the metallurgical sector. This study addresses the pressing sustainability challenges faced by the metallurgical industry in Serbia, which plays a vital role in the national economy, contributing around 10% to the GDP. Utilizing a comprehensive analysis of current facilities and technologies, the study reveals that Serbian metallurgical companies confront significant difficulties in adhering to legislative requirements pertaining to cleaner production and sustainable practices. A detailed assessment of the state of the art in production techniques and pollution is carried out, alongside potential solutions to the challenges posed by modern environmental regulations. Findings indicate that historical production practices, rooted since the Neolithic period, have manifested in considerable energy consumption and environmental degradation. The reliance on fossil fuels and the subsequent pollution of water, air, and soil underscore the necessity for a transformative approach to production processes within the sector. The results highlight opportunities for enhancing cleaner production, thereby guiding the metallurgical industry in Serbia towards sustainable development pathways.
