Hot spas and jacuzzis are popular in Iceland due to the abundance of reasonably priced geothermal heat available. However, the water from the district heating (DH) system is too warm to be admitted directly into the spa, requiring a mix with cold water, which leads to significant heat wastage. This study aims to improve heat efficiency by proposing a design that enables the direct feeding of geothermal water into spa pots, eliminating the cold water mixing process. An open heat exchanger is employed to transfer heat from the geothermal water to the bulk spa water. A case study was conducted on a specific spa where heat load measurements were taken during operational and non-operational phases. A design utilizing a circular double-plate open heat exchanger was suggested, enabling free and forced convection for enhanced thermal transfer. Temperature fields before and after the implementation were monitored using thermocouples, with results showing good correlation between measured temperatures and simulated thermal and fluid-dynamic models. The findings indicate promising potential for substantially reducing energy expenses in continuously heated geothermal spas.
