The study of electricity and magnetism has roots tracing back to ancient observations that preceded recorded history. This paper explores the historical beginnings of these theories, highlighting early phenomena such as the attraction of chaff to rubbed amber and iron to loadstone. The objective is to outline significant contributions to the understanding of electricity and magnetism, starting with Thales of Miletus who posited that loadstone attracts iron due to its soul, reflecting early philosophical inquiries into the nature of movement and life. The methodology employed includes a review of historical texts and interpretations from Greek philosophers, particularly Lucretius and Epicurus, to identify the transition from mythological to scientific explanations of natural phenomena. Results indicate that while ancient civilizations had rudimentary notions of electricity and magnetism, it wasn't until the Greeks began to formulate scientific-type explanations, influenced by their cultural and commercial interactions, that a more structured understanding emerged. This exploration reveals the complexities of early scientific thought and the gradual evolution of concepts that have shaped modern physics.
