The fine-grained fraction (<1.25 mm) of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of its chemical and phase compositions, as well as its leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid solutions. The waste product was found to contain approximately 55% zinc (Zn), 14% chloride (Cl), and less than 0.4% of other metals such as iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and aluminum (Al). The mixture comprised metallic zinc, simonkollite, zinc oxide, and zinc hydroxide chloride. The study investigated the dissolution of metals from the zinc ash based on varying solid-to-liquid ratios (1:80-1:20), acid concentrations (0.23-2.0 M), and temperature settings (20-60°C). Optimal results, achieving almost 100% zinc recovery, were obtained at 2M hydrochloric acid, 20°C, with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20 over a leaching period of 30 minutes. The final leachate solutions were predominantly contaminated with iron and lead ions, both measured below 0.15 g/L. The research also proposed further treatment of the solution to extract either metallic zinc or zinc chloride.
