This study investigates the ecological and human health risks associated with heavy metals in soils of selected copper mining areas, focusing on the Bor area. The objective was to assess the concentration of heavy metals in surface soil samples collected from various sites, including Open Pit Bor, Open Pit Cerovo, a grassland along the Borska Reka River, and an unpolluted garden as a reference site. A range of spontaneous plants and vegetables were analyzed for heavy metal uptake. The methodology involved sampling and subsequent laboratory analysis of soil and plant samples to determine heavy metal concentrations. The results revealed significant levels of heavy metals at the mining sites compared to the reference site, indicating potential ecological disturbances and health risks for local populations relying on these resources. The findings underscore the need for monitoring and management strategies to address heavy metal contamination in mining areas, ensuring the protection of the environment and public health.
