Abstract

Language:

During the continuous casting of steel, the quality of cast products is significantly influenced by the flow dynamics at the mold's meniscus level. This study aims to investigate the effects of double ruler electromagnetic breaking (EMBr) on flow control within the mold. A validated transient magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow model was developed to assess the impacts of various factors such as mold thickness, width, argon injection rate, casting speed, and the design of the submergence entry nozzle (SEN). The results demonstrate that implementing electromagnetic fields can effectively stabilize flow conditions, reducing surface flow irregularities and associated defects in the molten steel interface. These enhancements facilitate better mold surface temperature management and decrease interfacial turbulence, mitigating issues like slag entrapment and surface deformation. Consequently, this research underscores the potential of electromagnetic interventions in optimizing continuous casting operations, suggesting viable pathways for improving steel quality and production efficiency. Ultimately, the findings provide valuable insights for steel industries seeking to enhance operational stability and product integrity during the casting process.
