Abstract

Language:

The refining function of slags in ladle metallurgy involves the desulphurization process and the removal of inclusions from the steel melt during the deoxidation procedure. This review aims to explore the significant interaction between slag and steel, which enhances the overall efficiency of secondary steelmaking. The methodology includes a comprehensive examination of existing literature related to slag's active and passive roles in refining steel, including its protective function against oxidation and heat loss. Additionally, it investigates the detrimental effects of slag as a source of reoxidation and harmful inclusions. The results highlight that, while inclusions are traditionally viewed as deoxidation byproducts dictated by the steel's composition, the role of slag extends beyond mere inclusion capture. It engages chemically with the steel during intensive ladle treatment, indicating that understanding these interactions is crucial for optimizing steel quality. Ultimately, findings from this review underline the complexity of slag-steel interactions, paving the way for improved processes in secondary steelmaking.
