The mining sector has significant social, environmental, and economic impacts, particularly in the developing world where operations often affect vulnerable populations and natural ecosystems. This paper aims to explore strategies for enhancing the sustainability of mining practices. Utilizing a review of current initiatives and frameworks, including consultations with over 150 individuals and organizations, it investigates the adverse effects of mining and how the industry can reform its approach to minimize environmental degradation. The findings reveal a critical need for mining companies to adopt comprehensive strategies that ensure long-term sustainable outcomes. Key initiatives such as the Global Mining Initiative demonstrate a collective effort among major mining firms to reevaluate their societal responsibilities and improve their environmental performance. The paper concludes that concerted efforts at both local and international levels are essential to align mining activities with sustainable development goals.
