Ticor SA began with a detailed feasibility study in 1995, leading to the approval of the Hillendale mine and Mineral Separation Plant in 2000. The smelter, located just outside Empangeni, was equipped with two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. This paper presents the experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces, highlighting the impact on ramp-up rates. The smelting operations at Ticor SA are capable of producing 250 kt/a of TiO2 slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron, making it a significant player in the heavy minerals industry, which is crucial for the production of titanium dioxide feedstock used in various applications such as pigments and titanium metal. The operational challenges during the commissioning phase and the overall performance metrics of the plant are discussed, providing insights into the effectiveness of the smelting process and its contribution to the titanium minerals supply chain. The outcomes indicate the enhancements achieved in efficiency and production capacity, ultimately reinforcing the importance of detailed planning and execution in industrial operations.
