Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the release of nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti) during orthodontic treatment, focusing on biocompatibility and corrosion of metal alloys used in dentistry. The objective was to determine salivary pH variations and evaluate the release of metal ions in urine and saliva, using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and corrosion assessment through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A total of 35 individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment were selected, with saliva and urine samples collected at baseline, and again at 3 and 6 months following the placement of fixed appliances. Statistical analyses applied the ANOVA model of repeated measures, focusing on a significance level of p < 0.05. Results indicated a significant increase in Ni concentration in saliva from 3 to 6 months, while a notable Ti increase in urine was observed during the same timeframe. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring the release of metal ions in orthodontic patients, while also highlighting potential implications for the biocompatibility of orthodontic materials. Ultimately, this research contributes valuable insights into the effects of metal ion release in the context of orthodontic treatment.
