Abstract

Language:

An exploratory development program was carried out to investigate composition and construction variations in 3D carbon/carbon composites. Utilizing a modified 3D orthogonal preform construction, designated as Mod 3, the study focused on examining the amount and type of graphite reinforcing yarn, as well as preform construction methodologies. The carbon/carbon composites were processed through multiple impregnation and heat treatment cycles employing various resin and pitch matrix precursors, including phenolic resin and synthetic pitches. The results elucidated the mechanical and thermal properties, microstructure, and porosity of the composites. Comprehensive evaluation revealed that a newly developed composite exhibited significant improvements in mechanical properties compared to the reference material. This work provides critical insights and guidelines for enhancing the development of carbon/carbon composites, specifically targeting aerospace applications where superior performance is essential.
