Abstract

Language:

Electroslag remelting (ESR) technology, developed over the past 50 years, has become a cornerstone of special electrometallurgy, originating in the Soviet Union and significantly impacting global practices. This paper aims to explore the evolution and technical advancements of ESR. Through historical analysis and a review of key developments, the authors chronicle the introduction of ESR in industrial applications, beginning with the first furnaces in 1958 at Ukrainian metallurgical plants. The methodology focuses on a systematic documentation of industrial milestones and technological innovations related to ESR, including the international symposiums highlighting Ukrainian contributions to the field. Results indicate that the widespread adoption of ESR worldwide during the mid-1960s was significantly influenced by Ukrainian technologies and patents. The paper further outlines the progressive stages of ESR development, from laboratory research to the standardization of production processes for high-quality complex-alloy steels. By summarizing essential phases, this work underscores the significance of ESR in contemporary steel production and its role in shaping future metallurgical standards. A comprehensive understanding of these advancements reveals the potential for further innovation in the field of electroslag remelting.
