This module on extractive metallurgy focuses on mineral processing techniques relevant to both hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy, designed for students at the African University of Science and Technology in Abuja. The objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of different methods of extracting valuable minerals from ores. The methodology encompasses leaching techniques, including both agitation and non-agitation systems, as well as the principles governing the dissolution of metals and the stability of metal ions in leach solutions. Results highlight key factors affecting leaching efficiency, such as particle size, temperature, and the concentration of leaching reagents. Various leaching systems, including heap and vat leaching, are examined, along with purification methods like ion-exchange and solvent extraction to concentrate multi-metal solutions. Additionally, processes such as electroplating, electrowinning, and electrorefining are discussed, emphasizing their importance in improving material properties and purifying metals. The content aims to equip students with the technical knowledge required for practical application in the field of extractive metallurgy.
