This study investigates the grounding function of the past tense in English through the lens of Cognitive Grammar, a theoretical framework that highlights the relationship between deictic expressions and their contextual ground. The objective is to elucidate how the past tense serves to establish a connection between linguistic propositions and their context, focusing on the inherent temporal relationships that inform this grounding. Methodologically, the research synthesizes theoretical perspectives from notable linguists such as Lyons, Langacker, and Quirk, comparing their insights on tense as a deictic category and its implications for grounding. The results indicate that while the definition of the past tense by Langacker accurately reflects its primary function, it falls short of encompassing the diverse grounding roles the past tense plays across various linguistic contexts. By extending the analysis, this paper provides a nuanced understanding of how the past tense operates within the cognitive framework of language, emphasizing its role in anchoring events in time relative to the speaker’s perspective. This exploration contributes to the fields of linguistics and cognitive semantics by offering deeper insights into the mechanics of temporal reference in English.
