Abstract

Language:

With the discovery of Na-sulfate minerals (thenardite, mirabilite) on Mars and Europa, recent studies using these minerals have focused on their abiotic synthesis and the implications for the search for life in extraterrestrial environments. This research aims to investigate the viability of sodium sulfate minerals as biosignatures and to assess their potential as indicators of past life on these celestial bodies. Methodologically, the study employs a combination of mineralogical analysis, laboratory simulations, and thermodynamic modeling to evaluate the conditions under which these minerals form and remain stable. The results suggest that sodium sulfate minerals can provide insights into the geochemical conditions conducive to the preservation of organic compounds and possible biosignatures. Additionally, this research outlines the potential for using these minerals in future astrobiological missions to Mars and Europa, contributing to our understanding of life's potential beyond Earth. By integrating mineralogical data with astrobiological implications, this study enhances our comprehension of extraterrestrial environments and the processes that may support life. These findings underscore the importance of sodium sulfate minerals in astrobiological research and the quest to detect signs of life beyond our planet.
