This study investigates the spouted-bed electrowinning of copper, emphasizing the effects of operational variables on copper deposition at a spouted-bed cathode, comparing it to conventional electrowinning practices. Conducted at the University of California, Berkeley, the experiments utilized electrolytes similar to those found in standard copper electrowinning processes. Two anodic reactions were explored: the evolution of oxygen on a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) and the oxidation of copper matte. The findings highlighted that, despite achieving a high-current density, the electrical energy consumption remained equal to or lower than that observed in conventional methods. This research identifies not only the procedural efficiency but also potential improvements in current efficiency relative to traditional techniques, primarily addressing challenges such as electrode area costs, electrical energy demands, and issues related to impurities in cathode copper. The results contribute to advancing knowledge in the efficient deposition of metals from solution, paving the way for enhanced methodologies in metallurgical practices.
