The unregulated activities of a scrap iron and steel smelting industry in Lagos, Nigeria necessitated the sampling of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) from various sections of the industry. This study aimed to analyze the concentrations of airborne particulates to assess potential environmental and health risks. Samples were collected and analyzed using polarized energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique, enabling the simultaneous detection of over 25 elements. Results showed mass concentration levels ranging from 86 to 8765 µg/m3 for PM10 and 10 to 462 µg/m3 for PM2.5, with the highest concentrations found at one of the electric arc furnaces. Notably, lead (Pb) concentrations exceeded the permissible limits set by OSHA and EPA, indicating serious environmental health concerns. Similarly, zinc (Zn) levels exceeded recommended occupational exposure limits. The findings underscore the urgent need for improved emission control systems in the industry to mitigate the adverse effects of these pollutants on workers and the surrounding community.
