Mycomining: perspective on fungi as scavengers of scattered metal, mineral, and rare earth element resources

Mining is crucial for various sectors, yet it poses significant environmental challenges. This study aims to explore the potential of biological mining through fungi, termed 'Mycomining', as a more sustainable alternative to traditional mining methods. Employing a comprehensive literature review, we assess the advantages of fungi in scavenging metals, minerals, and rare earth elements from diverse substrates, including soil, wood, and aquatic environments. Our findings reveal that Mycomining can produce only biomass-based organic waste, offering more flexible growth conditions compared to phytomining, making it particularly advantageous for low-grade ores and areas where conventional mining is impractical due to geographical, political, or social constraints. Additionally, this innovative approach not only provides a method for resource recovery but also contributes to environmental remediation of contaminated land, thereby aligning with several UN Sustainable Development Goals. Ultimately, the research highlights Mycomining as a viable supplement to urban mining efforts, advancing the push for more energy- and waste-efficient resource recovery techniques.
