Abstract

Language:

In order to improve the learning process about the unit operation of Liquid Extraction, a graphical user interface (GUI) in Matlab® is presented for designing extracting systems with various types of contact, allowing stages to achieve equilibrium between both liquid phases. The program, named ExtractING, integrates theoretical studies and material balances as documented in key academic resources, initiating with the input of feed and solvent quantities alongside their respective compositions and establishing a raffinate exit condition for multistage setups. It necessitates the introduction of a ternary system (solute, dissolvent, diluent) and an operating temperature to compute equilibrium conditions using Van Laar activity model equations. The methodology employs material balances, multiple iterative routines, and equilibrium diagrams to determine raffinate and extract conditions across all stages, alongside calculating the minimum number of stages required for the desired separation, thereby providing the user with approximate equipment size and cost estimates. The application showcases a comparative analysis of maximum separations achieved under specified conditions between counter-current and cross-current equipment, examining separation percentage trends with varying feed quantities and temperature fluctuations.
