This study investigates the kinetics of gold leaching in alkaline sulfide solutions using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The objective is to understand the leaching behavior of gold in deaerated 1 M Na2S solution. Methodologically, the leaching process was analyzed through multiple cyclic voltammogram measurements at varying scan rates, while monitoring frequency shifts in the quartz crystal. Results reveal that oxidation peaks occurred between -0.40 to 0.20 V, indicating significant gold oxidation. The frequency shift increased throughout the forward and reverse scans, particularly in the potential range of -0.40 to -0.06 V, suggesting mass loss of the electrode material. Approximately 0.015 mg of gold was observed to leach out based on atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis, leading to a calculated gold leaching rate of 6.4×10^-5 mg/s·cm2. The formation of soluble Au(I)-S(IV) species within the specified potential range was confirmed through the developed Eh-pH diagrams. This study contributes essential insights into the mechanisms governing gold stability and leaching in alkaline sulfide environments.
