Two centuries ago, Alessandro Volta announced the invention of the voltaic battery, a device that transformed the landscape of modern physics and practical medicine through its ability to produce electricity. However, Volta expressed disappointment at the focus on chemical effects rather than the intriguing electrical-physiological effects, which he believed held significant potential for both physiology and medicine. This paper explores the historical context of the debate between Volta and Luigi Galvani, contrasting their respective views on the nature of electric phenomena, particularly in relation to muscle contractions in frog preparations. Volta's assertion that electricity was generated by metals conflicted with Galvani's perspective that the electricity was intrinsic to the organism itself. The ensuing controversy has traditionally positioned Volta as a purely physical scientist, overlooking his genuine interests in animal physiology. By examining Volta's work and his correspondence, the paper argues that a more nuanced understanding of his contributions to physiology is necessary, one that recognizes the unique interplay between physics and biology in his research. This analysis not only sheds light on the historical narrative surrounding these two influential figures but also highlights the foundational role their investigations played in the development of electrophysiology.
