At Jhagadia Copper Ltd (India), copper is produced through a secondary route using Top Blown Rotary Converter technology. The facility processes a diverse range of raw materials including matte-slag reverts, copper cakes, dross, oxide ore, and high-grade copper scraps, demonstrating significant flexibility in treatment. The plant is capable of refining and producing blister grade copper from the Kaldo furnace and a secondary converter, which subsequently undergoes fire refining and electro refining to yield high-quality cathode copper. The research discusses the operational experiences faced during the commissioning and stabilization phases of the production plant, with an emphasis on achieving a casting rate near the design capacity and maintaining low rejection rates of anodes. Technical knowledge and project management support were provided by Boliden Contech AB and Mount ISA Mines Ltd, enabling the successful implementation of the ISA process for electrolytic refining. The paper also outlines plans for capacity expansion and diversification into additional high-value metals, as well as addressing challenges encountered during operations, such as furnace malfunctions and smelting process disturbances.
