A new technology for recovery of gold from loaded carbon developed by Kunming Institute of Technology is introduced. The objective of this study was to enhance the efficiency of gold recovery while addressing the limitations of traditional methods. The methodology involved an innovative desorption process using hot caustic solution, significantly reducing the elution time to 6.5 hours and achieving a gold desorption recovery of 98.7%. The effectiveness of the new process was rigorously evaluated, resulting in a gold concentration in the eluate reaching 6 g/l and an energy consumption of 2.346 GJ per ton of dry loaded carbon. Furthermore, the electrowinning process yielded a current efficiency of 62.29% with more than 99.7% gold recovery, successfully depositing gold onto stainless-steel cathodes in the form of foil. These advancements have led to the adoption of the new technology in two smelters, with production scales of 10,000 oz/year and two lines of 5,000 oz/year, demonstrating its practical application and efficiency in real-world settings.
