This paper discusses the Inco process for continuous cyanide removal from industrial wastewaters, which was patented in 1984 and optimized for operational efficiency. The objective of this study is to evaluate the commercial applications and effectiveness of the SO2-air cyanide removal process across various mining operations. Methodology includes pilot testing conducted in 1982 at Campbell Red Lake Mines, which demonstrated the feasibility of oxidizing both free and complexed cyanide to cyanate while selectively precipitating iron-bound cyanide. The findings show that this process has been implemented in twelve commercial installations by the end of 1988, with significant advantages over alternative methods, particularly in terms of cost efficiency and completeness of cyanide removal results. Specifically, the results indicated effective cyanide destruction in numerous mining operations, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Key operational insights were also derived from challenges encountered during the treatment of cyanide liquors, leading to enhancements in process design to optimize performance. Period.
