The aluminium industry is a significant consumer of refractories used within melting and holding furnaces, which operate at comparatively low temperatures. This paper aims to explore the complex challenges surrounding refractory selection for these furnaces, dispelling the notion that low operating temperatures equate to minimal challenges. The investigation delves into the factors contributing to the wear and damage of hot face refractories, including the increasing furnace temperatures, evolving flux types, and emerging practices in furnace maintenance. By thoroughly analyzing the distinct environments within the furnace, particularly zones experiencing harsh conditions like the belly band, the study highlights the need for carefully selected refractory materials. Recommendations are provided for refractory choices, taking into account practical considerations such as local material availability, personnel expertise, installation techniques, and operational efficiency. Ultimately, the paper emphasizes the importance of robust refractory design and installation practices to enhance furnace longevity and performance.
