The extraction of metal ores and coal is crucial for modern society, prompting significant economic contributions, particularly in non-ferrous metals like copper and gold. This editorial discusses the dual nature of mining, acknowledging its vital role while highlighting the environmental challenges it poses. A comprehensive review of historical data indicates that mining generates extensive waste, with estimates of about 4,700 million tons of stored waste rock and 1,200 million tons of processing wastes in the European Union alone. The study underscores the complexity in accurately appraising these quantities due to varying national regulations and data collection practices. Furthermore, it addresses the pressing issue of acid mine drainage (AMD) resulting from the oxidation of pyritic minerals present in sulphidic ores, which can lead to severe contamination of natural waters with heavy metals and other hazardous substances. Such environmental impacts, alongside the visual disruption caused by mining activities, necessitate a careful assessment of mining practices and waste management strategies to mitigate adverse effects on ecosystems and human health.
