Characterisation of solids encountered in hydrometallurgical processes is important for gaining an improved understanding of the physical and chemical transformations occurring and to ensure optimal management of waste. These solids are usually complex and consist of polycrystalline and sometimes poly-amorphous minerals / compounds. In this study the composition of solid samples generated during hydrometallurgical processing of leach residue were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and diffuse reflectance Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Siroquant software was used in conjunction with XRD results to determine the percentage of crystalline phases. XRD and DRIFTS analysis of different size fractions of the samples revealed that this methodology showed potential of fractionating leach residue samples however further fractionation of the whole rock using suitable technique may lead to the production of sub-samples (with more amorphous content). FTIR results shows that jarosite species is present in all fractions (4.53 to 0.8 micro m).
