Abstract

Language:

Metallography is a critical field that focuses on the study of materials' microstructures, serving as a key tool for both ensuring product reliability and analyzing material failures. This paper outlines the essential steps for proper metallographic specimen preparation, including documentation, sectioning and cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching, microscopic analysis, and hardness testing. The methodology encompasses various cutting techniques tailored to the material type, emphasizing the importance of minimizing damage during the sectioning process to preserve accurate microstructural characterization. Specific guidelines for blade selection based on material characteristics and cutting parameters are presented in tables. By establishing appropriate specimen preparation procedures grounded in physical property knowledge and careful selection of abrasives and equipment parameters, the study aims to enhance the representation of the materials' microstructures. This systematic approach serves to reinforce metallography as a powerful quality control measure and an investigative tool in materials science. The insights provided in this paper are intended to assist practitioners and researchers in the field of metallography in achieving optimal results during specimen preparation.
