The cleanliness of a prepared surface is crucial for the durability of protective coating systems. Despite the existence of surface cleanliness standards for over fifty years, confusion persists regarding their definitions and the relationship between pictorial and written standards, particularly between North American standards (Joint SSPC/NACE) and ISO standards used globally. This paper reviews the various standards and levels of blast cleaning, elucidating their descriptions and differences. Utilizing computer image analysis, the study assesses cleanliness levels at the near white (very thorough) standard and finds significant overlap between ISO and Joint standards. An effort is made to simplify and standardize the cleanliness levels, integrating current standards, to aid inspectors in evaluating blast cleaned surfaces effectively. This research highlights the need for a clearer understanding of standards to ensure consistent quality in surface preparation.
