Selective photoreduction using the semiconductor TiO2 under UV irradiation has been investigated as a method for the recovery and separation of platinum group metals (PGMs) including rhodium, palladium, and platinum. This study aimed to determine the effects of pH value and the concentration of the sacrificial reducing agent (ethanol) on the reduction rates of Rh(III), Pd(II), and Pt(IV) ions in various mixtures. Methodologically, conditions favorable for reduction and adsorption on TiO2 were established through experimentation. The results indicated that previously deposited Pt or Pd metal can enhance the reduction of Rh(III) ions under conditions where reduction would not typically occur, based on pH levels. Additionally, a novel method for the separation of a mixture containing Rh(III), Pd(II), and Pt(IV) through photoreduction and adsorption on TiO2 was proposed, highlighting both its effectiveness and potential advantages over existing complex separation methods. This research contributes to the development of more efficient and ecologically mindful technologies for PGM recovery in South Africa, where a significant portion of the world's PGM deposits are located.
