Since 1999, Codelco and the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Chile have collaborated to develop a computational system aimed at optimizing long-term mining plans. The initial optimization model was introduced at El Teniente, the largest underground copper mine operational today, utilizing a network-flow approach that began at the extraction stage on a block level and incorporated downstream processes, including crushing and concentration. Subsequently, a similar model was deployed for Codelco’s open-pit mines in northern Chile. Currently, these models are integrated into a unified computational system capable of evaluating production plans across multiple mines—both underground and open-pit—that may share processing stages or transportation means, such as a railway network. This system is a crucial element in the planning cycle and has significantly enhanced the company's overall value, addressing the existing challenges of increasing operational capacity and efficiency while necessitating substantial investments in production infrastructure and new mineral deposits.
