As the impacts of climate change become increasingly apparent, the need for widespread electrification is now internationally recognized, prompting a surge in global battery production projected to grow by 30% annually until 2030. However, manufacturing challenges persist as batteries are difficult to produce at gigawatt-hour scale and sensitive to variations, leading to safety incidents and reliability issues. This perspective highlights the challenges and opportunities for improving battery quality at scale. We describe the interplay between battery failure modes and their root causes, emphasizing the need for effective management during cell production to ensure safety and reliability. Our goal is to raise awareness of the battery quality challenge, which is critical for the financial success of manufacturing and the broader goal of safe global electrification.
