Abstract

Language:

Column leach studies of a low-grade porphyry copper ore were made to investigate the role of atmospheric oxygen in the leaching of copper waste dumps. The methodology involved alternating oxygen absorption and copper leach cycles, where the leach solution was displaced from the column with oxygen, and the volume of oxygen reacting with the ore was measured using a gas burette. Results indicated that the oxidation rate was dependent on the pH of the solution, which was notably increased by raising the temperature of the system. Moreover, reducing the particle size of the sample also enhanced the oxidation rate. A material balance revealed that one mole of oxygen yielded more than one mole of copper in solution. This study discusses important parameters affecting the leaching process and connects the findings to broader dump leaching practices, highlighting the significance of improving copper recovery rates from waste dumps, which hold a substantial amount of untapped copper resources.
