The electric arc furnace (EAF) is a prominent technology in steel production that primarily utilizes scrap metal as its raw material. This paper aims to explore the significance of refractory maintenance in EAF operations, particularly in high-temperature regions known as hot spots. Utilizing a combination of empirical observations and mathematical modeling, the study examines the Refractory Erosion Index (Ri), which predicts the wear and tear of refractory linings under varying thermal and mechanical stresses. The methodology includes a comprehensive overview of common refractory materials like magnesite and dolomite and maintenance techniques such as gunning and ramming. Results indicate that areas exposed to heightened temperatures and scouring, particularly the slag line and hot spots, require targeted maintenance efforts to prevent accelerated erosion and damage. Effective management of refractory materials not only extends the lifespan of the furnace lining but also enhances operational efficiency and reduces downtime, ultimately lowering operational costs. This research underscores the importance of continuous assessment and maintenance strategies for ensuring the sustainable operation of EAFs.
