The purpose of this paper is to design a new technique for improving the power factor of three-phase and single-phase induction motors. The enhancement of power factor is essential to achieve values close to unity and avoid penalties from electrical distributors, as induction motors generally operate at lagging power factors. The application of automatic power factor improvement techniques is targeted towards industrial settings, where maintaining a power factor near unity is critical for stability, efficiency, and increased apparatus capacity. This technique employs microcontroller technology to minimize costs while maximizing effectiveness in power factor improvement. The study highlights the importance of reactive power in the overall performance of electrical systems and presents innovative solutions for addressing power factor issues in induction motors. By leveraging programmable logic controllers and zero crossing detectors, this work aims to advance the tools available for engineers to create more efficient electrical systems.
