This study explores the mineralogical and geochemical aspects of radioactive waste disposal, focusing on the chemical and mineral composition of natural and modified bentonite clays from the Cherkas’ke deposit. The objective is to evaluate their effectiveness in immobilizing radionuclides, specifically 137Cs. Methodologically, the research involves analysis of exchange cations, diffractograms, differential heating curves, and IR spectra, alongside sorption tests conducted over varying contact times and pH levels. Results indicate that the sorption capacity for 137Cs on modified bentonite exceeds 90%, while natural bentonite shows about 85%. Moreover, it was observed that with prolonged contact time, the forms of radionuclides that do not contribute to migration increase, demonstrating the potential of bentonites to serve as efficient barriers for long-term storage of radioactive waste. This finding is particularly relevant for the safe disposal of radioactive waste in Ukraine, where significant amounts of conditioning waste are present, highlighting the need for further laboratory studies on bentonite’s physicochemical properties in relation to other nuclear pollutants.
