This study investigates the status of chemical elements in tree species from the Atlantic Forest located near an industrial complex in Cubatão, São Paulo, Brazil. The primary objective was to assess the environmental quality of the conservation unit Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar (PESM) by comparing the chemical composition of tree leaves and soil samples against background values from the Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho (PECB). Samples were collected and analyzed using instrumental neutron activation analysis to determine levels of key chemical elements. The results indicated elevated concentrations of arsenic (As), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) in tree leaves from PESM, suggesting significant anthropogenic influences on the forest ecosystem. This research underscores the critical need for ongoing environmental monitoring in industrially impacted regions, emphasizing the importance of both plant and soil analyses in understanding ecological health. These findings contribute valuable insights into the extent of pollution in the Atlantic Forest and highlight the role of local flora as indicators of environmental degradation.
