Abstract

Language:

The use of ammonia as a leaching agent in the recovery of copper from ores and concentrates has a number of potential benefits, including the ability to treat ores with acid-consuming gangue, non-corrosivity, the insolubility of iron in solution, and increased selectivity. This paper reviews both historical and contemporary applications of ammonia-based leaching systems for copper recovery and presents the findings of a laboratory investigation that involved the leaching of a copper concentrate as well as low-grade ore. The impact of various operating variables such as particle size, oxygen addition, agitation, and temperature on leaching effectiveness was analyzed, revealing that particle size had the most significant influence, with smaller sizes enhancing leaching rates and recoveries. Additionally, the potential for using ammonium salts in heap leaching is explored, along with results from small-scale column leach tests. Approaches for recovering copper from the leach solution are outlined, and the types of ores and concentrates that may benefit from ammonia leaching as a viable alternative processing route are discussed.
