Abstract

Language:

Enargite (Cu3AsS4) is a major complex copper mineral and often is a carrier of invisible gold particles. The objective of this study was to investigate the effective parameters of the atmospheric enargite leaching process in ferric chloride media. A series of experiments were conducted at temperatures below 100 °C to assess how ferric, chloride, sulphate, and cuprous concentrations, as well as temperature, mixing rate, and leaching slurry pulp density, influence the leaching process. The methodology involved leaching both copper and arsenic into a sulphuric acid solution while simultaneously precipitating arsenic as ferric arsenate. The results indicated that the addition of cupric chloride significantly increased the copper recovery rate, particularly at elevated temperatures. The highest leaching kinetics and copper recoveries were achieved with the initial addition of cupric chloride at 90 ºC. The findings suggest that hydrometallurgical treatment of enargite using ferric chloride media could provide a viable alternative to traditional pyrometallurgical methods, addressing the challenges associated with arsenic release into the environment.
