Abstract

Language:

India's transition to electric mobility is central to its net-zero targets, supported by national schemes and policies that have rapidly expanded the electric vehicles (EVs) market, achieving a CAGR of approximately 78% over the past five years. This study evaluates India's preparedness for large-scale advanced chemistry cell (ACC) battery manufacturing by combining stakeholder consultations with a secondary analysis of policy and market data. The focus is on identifying the demand–supply gap in ACC manufacturing, exploring raw material dependence, assessing infrastructure readiness, and analyzing relevant policy frameworks. Findings indicate significant opportunities through domestic demand growth, policy support, and emerging research and development capabilities. However, challenges relating to mineral access, capital intensity, and workforce availability persist. To address these issues, a strategic roadmap is proposed, emphasizing trade agreements, local refining and recycling, fiscal reforms, and skill development aimed at reducing import dependence, closing the projected demand–supply gap, and positioning India as a competitive hub for ACC technologies.
