Abstract

Language:

The tundish plays a major role in the continuous casting process, influencing the quality of the final product and efficient casting conditions. This study aims to investigate the flow characteristics and mass exchange in a six-strand tundish by combining physical and mathematical modeling methods. Measurements were conducted directly at a steel plant during normal operations, focusing on the residence time distribution (RTD) characteristics by manipulating the manganese content in steel. A water model of the tundish at a dimensional scale of 1:3 was employed alongside numerical simulations using the finite-volume commercial code FLUENT and the standard k-e turbulence model. The results demonstrated that the F-curve, describing the transitory zone in the tundish, can be derived from various measurement techniques. The tracer concentration characteristics obtained for both the physical and numerical modeling approaches showed significant similarity. This investigation provides crucial insights into optimizing tundish design and flow control devices to enhance the casting process by minimizing dead zones and improving non-metallic inclusions separation.
