This paper reports analytical review results on the global and national importance of solar energy as a clean and renewable source of energy. The objective is to assess the mean monthly sunshine duration across seasons in Kathmandu and its implications for solar energy utilization. The methodology involves a review of solar radiation data, highlighting differences among seasons: pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons exhibit higher mean sunshine durations of about 8 hours/day, compared to summer with about 5 hours/day and winter with about 7 hours/day. Results indicate that solar energy reception varies seasonally, with pre-monsoon and monsoon receiving approximately 250 W/m2 and 200 W/m2 respectively, while winter receives the least solar radiation at about 150 W/m2. The findings emphasize the significant potential for solar energy utilization in both rural and urban areas in Nepal, supporting the need for solar home systems in rural, scattered settlements and contributing to solutions for urban energy shortages and environmental pollution issues.
